How to Hire a Remodeling Contractor
Need To Update Your Home? Here Are Our Tips For How to Hire a Remodeling Contractor
It’s rare to spend any substantial amount of time in your home without needing to remodel at some point. You may need to remodel when you move in, to make your home more closely fit your needs and your preferences. Other homeowners might remodel when moving out, in order to raise the value of their home. Changes to your family or your tastes can all lead to a remodel…which can in turn lead to the need to hire a remodeling contractor.
Want help navigating the world of shopping for remodeling pros? Here are our tips for how to hire a remodeling contractor.
Do You Need To Hire a Remodeling Contractor?
So you know that your home needs to be remodeled; but does that mean you need to hire a remodeling contractor to do your home remodeling? DIY remodeling may seem an attractive option to many homeowners. In theory, it saves money because they won’t have to pay for a contractor’s labor, only the remodeling products themselves. Plus, it can instill a sense of pride to say that you “did it yourself.”
But keep in mind that the finished remodeling product is the thing you’ll have to live with for years to come unless you want to put forth the extra investment to fix it. The truth is, even for handy homeowners, a full kitchen or bathroom remodel or home addition is an immense task to take on alone. In some cases, you’re not only responsible for the remodel itself but for building codes and permits. You’re also completely liable for anything that goes wrong on the job.
You do have to pay for labor when you hire a remodeling contractor, but with that labor comes their expertise. Remodeling contractors remodel homes every day and know all the most effective processes and best products to use. They’re also often insured, so if something goes wrong on the job, you don’t have to pay extra. At the end of the day, although DIY might seem cheaper upfront, hiring a remodeling contractor could save you more money in the long run.
How To Find the Best Remodeling Contractor
The next step, of course, is finding the right remodeling contractor to hire for your home. With so many options available, the beginning of the search can be daunting. Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to narrow down the search, including:
These days, it’s easy to turn to the internet, but word of mouth is still an unbeatable solution to finding a reliable home remodeling contractor. When you ask your neighbor, friend, family member, or coworker about remodeling contractors they’ve used and trust, you can ask them all the questions you want and get answers in real time. You might even be able to see the results. Did your mother recently have her kitchen remodeled in a style that you love? Ask about her remodeling contractor? Coworker just returned from vacation while their home was being remodeled? Ask who did the job.
Once you do turn your search online, you’ll hopefully have a list of word-of-mouth companies from your social network to research. This is a great time to read reviews on Google, Yelp, Angi, Houzz, Guild Quality, and so on. Make sure to take a look at multiple reviews, not just the top two. Look for consistencies. If multiple reviews say that the remodeling team left the house a mess or that they weren’t very communicative, that’s a red flag. On the other hand, if most of the reviews are glowing about the customer service and the beautiful finishes of the remodeling company, that’s a great sign towards working with them.
Check Their Website
Don’t just leave it at external reviews, though. The remodeling contractor’s website will give you a sense of what you can expect from them as a company. Do they serve your area? What are their exact services? What’s their level of experience? What is their hiring process like? (Do they hire subcontractors or have their own team?) Are they licensed and insured? You should be able to find the answer to all of these questions on their website.
Interview Contractors You’re Interested In
The last bit of homework you need to do before making a decision? Talk to the companies you’re interested in. Call them and get a free quote, estimate, or consultation. It might even be best to interview a few different companies in order to see which one you feel best about. Make sure you have a list of questions prepared and that you feel satisfied with all of their answers.
Questions To Ask a Home Remodeling Contractor
So you’ve reached the interview stage. Now you need to prepare yourself with a list of questions to ask the home remodeling contractor in question. Some of these questions you might find answers to on their website, but it helps to confirm them with a live person in case their website has not been recently updated. Here are some of the questions we recommend asking:
- How long have you been in business?
- What kind of insurance do you have? Can I see proof of license and insurance?
- Will you take care of all of the necessary permits for my remodeling project?
- What is the payment schedule for the project? Do you offer financing?
- Do you hire subcontractors? Do you have experience working with your subcontractors?
- How will the project be supervised?
- What is your process for cleanup at the end of the project?
- What kind of challenges do you anticipate for this project?
- How will additional charges be dealt with?
- What kind of warranties do you offer?
- Do you have a list of references for me to look at?
Even asking the questions themselves should give you an idea of how communicative and upfront the remodeling contractor is, which is an essential part to any business relationship.
