Before You Hire Anyone (Even Us!) Make Sure You Read This

Homeowners often approach the issue of hiring a Lancaster contractor with some trepidation, and they should. After all, this is a company that’s going to make significant changes, for better or worse, to your home — and you’ll have to live with those changes or pay the cost to repair them. It’s not a decision to be made lightly.

At MBC Remodeling, we’d love to call ourselves your Lancaster remodeling contractor and we certainly think we’re qualified to do the job. However, you shouldn’t just take our word for it. You should evaluate each contracting company you consider carefully. That’s why we’ve developed a set of contractor standards that can apply to any contractor. Here are the factors you want to look for:

The first thing to consider when hiring a Lancaster contractor is stability. How long have they been in business? Is everything above board with their company? Have they been proven as a trustworthy company to work with? This isn’t about their reputation (we’ll get to that next), but rather the basics of stability.

The problem is you can’t simply ask a company if they’re stable. You have to dig deeper. Take a look at their business registration and ask about insurance coverage, which will protect you in the event that  property damage or injury happens on the job. If the contractor is reluctant to provide this information, you probably don’t want to work with them. You should also look for letters from local banks and the company’s suppliers to vouch for them.

Okay, so they’re a valid, stable business. Next, look into their local reputation. What do their customers say about them? What do others in the industry say about them?

There are a few ways to look into this. First, you can ask the contracting company for references. However, the references they keep will all be positive, so it helps to look at review platforms as well to get the full picture. Some of these review sites, such as Angie’s List, give out awards and recognitions, which can give you another idea of the company’s reputation. One solid source is the Better Business Bureau, who rates businesses of all kinds using a strict standard and 13 different criterias. MBC Remodeling currently has an A+ from BBB.

You can look into a company’s history and their reputation, but it’s hard to get the full picture of what you can expect until you’ve at least talked to them yourself. That’s where it helps to look at their policies and to schedule a consultation so you can get a sense of their professionalism.

The consultation will give you a good idea of the kind of business they are. Do they use high pressure sales tactics to try to push you into making a decision now, or do they simply lay out what they can do for you and let you decide? How detailed are their proposals? Look closely at the information provided for any fine print or hidden tricks. A Lancaster contractor that tries to hide costs is not someone you want to work with.

Finally, what can you expect from the work they’ll do on your home? While it’s hard to know this for certain until you sign with a contractor and the work begins, there are a few indicators. You can ask for pictures of their previous work or even ask to see a current job site, if available. You should also take a look at their warranties. Not only do warranties grant homeowners peace of mind, but they give a good indication of how well a company stands by their work. Ask plenty of questions until you feel as satisfied as possible about the level of workmanship you can expect. At MBC Remodeling, we have a strong reputation and we’ve proven ourselves to be a stable business. We’d love a chance to prove ourselves to you in terms of professionalism and workmanship. Contact us today for a free consultation.
