New Trends in Accents and Finishes For Your Bathroom

Over the past few years, the bathroom has gone from a room of strict utility (that wasn’t really talked about it public!) to a spa-like getaway that will allow you to relax from the stresses of everyday life. With this new change in room responsibility, however, comes the need to revamp and refresh the way the bathroom looks. Creating new accents and finishes in the bathroom is one of the easiest ways to rejuvenate the space. However, just like in any design industry, bathroom trends change throughout the years. These are some of the newest trends for bathroom remodeling in 2018.

Going Dark

Previously, designers and homeowners thought that the only way to make the bathroom a relaxing space in the home was to keep it light and airy, especially in the color palette. In 2018, however, this is proving to no longer be the case. Following the new kitchen trends, bathrooms are also starting to see the introduction of a darker color scheme.

While some homeowners are hesitant to try it – especially in a smaller space – having something that is dark can really make the rest of the room pop. Some designers are looking to adding a single, matte black fixture, or choosing tile or an accent wall that is darker grey or black to add depth and dimension to a room.

Metallics Making a Comeback

We all know metallics evoke an image of a bathroom from the 1940s or 1950s, with heavy brass fixtures that dominated the small space. These new metallic accents are a far cry from their past counterparts. Whereas silver and white fixtures have been the norm in bathroom design recently, 2018 has seen a resurgence of gold as a favored accent color. But it’s not the gold that you are thinking of. With modern construction techniques, gold fixtures are now available in a variety of finishes – satin, matte, even spun gold – which allows for use in a larger variety of designs.

Additionally, the previous use of chrome fixtures can be difficult to keep clean in a bathroom. Chrome shows water spots and fingerprints quite easily. Fixtures with gold finishes will alleviate some of this struggle from your everyday life. With the use of darker and cooler tones in current bathroom designs, gold accents and fixtures will provide a great contrast to that aesthetic.

Unique Accent Walls and Floors

Even if dark colors or metallic fixtures aren’t your cup of tea, there are still other ways to add a pop of interest to your bathroom. Installing an accent wall made of a different material, like ceramic or porcelain, can easily add a dramatic effect to your space. Using a geometric tile pattern – other than a square – on your floor can also create interest in the room. Don’t limit yourself to just the walls and floor! Creating an interesting graphic on the ceiling is another simple way to make your bathroom stand out.

Time to Renovate

A bathroom is one of the most important rooms in the house, as it provides a calming escape from the stresses of everyday life. If you want to create a bathroom that is unique and interesting, instead of just utilitarian, you should follow some of the trends mentioned above.
